In conjunction with our member organisation, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), CBBC is currently looking to recruit a candidate for the following position, which will be based in Beijing.
Senior Technical Manager – Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB)
Location: Beijing
Package: Competitive Gross salary range between RMB 35,000 – RMB 40,000 per month (13-month scale) based on matched qualifications and experiences
Institution Introduction
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is a statutory levy board funded by farmers, growers, and others in the supply chain. Our mission is to support levy payers with the tools, insight and support they need to be competitive and sustainable. AHDB’s Export team champions British beef, lamb, dairy and pork across global markets, delivering strategic support in trade development, technical engagement, and market access.
In 2024, UK red meat exports were valued at £1.77 billion.
AHDB plays a pivotal role in supporting export health certification, facilitating site approvals working with DEFRA, Trade Shows and hosting inward and outward trade missions. Our trade development work includes building relationships with overseas governments and industry stakeholders, supporting exporters, and promoting the high standards of British meat production. Recent initiatives have included a multi-market inward mission from Asia, Africa and the Americas, and a presence at international trade shows such as SIAL China, Gulf Food, SIAL Paris, and ANUGA.
Job Summary
As Senior Technical Manager, AHDB, you will lead AHDB China’s in-market technical support and insight for AHBD UK pig meat levy paying exporters, ensuring market opportunities are maintained and maximised, while identifying potential new opportunities. Work with UK exporter companies, Chinese pork sector participants and support UK government departments through the British Embassy.as necessary to optimise in-market opportunity. Working with industry and wider AHDB international team to support trade development opportunities. Given the nature of this role the post holder will be required to travel extensively across Greater China to meet with stakeholders and to participate in a range of events. The post holder will also be expected to travel to the UK and Europe annually to take part in training and conferences. Some travel within Asia may also be required.
Job Description
The post holder’s primary responsibilities are to: ? Lead AHDB technical insight on the Chinese pig meat market engaging with industry stakeholders, both UK approved exporters and in-market supply chain participants, including industry, meat associations and relevant authorities (where appropriate). ? Build relationships with officials and monitor Changing agri policy and regulations that may impact trade. ? Proactively engage with British Embassy team with technical insight / intelligence, as required, in support of maintaining existing market access and broadening market scope for UK exporters. ? Support with technical guidance on the import and clearance of consignments, liaise with Embassy officials and UK stakeholders on appropriate technical insight. ? Address arising issues with current and ongoing import approvals and provide advice/training to support exporters as required. ? Support UK embassy team with additional approval process and provide technical assistance to UK exporter applications. ? Collaborate with AHDB Market Access team on latest technical insight / procedures, both in UK and Chinese supply chain to ensure alignment and understanding of market requirements. ? Media engagement at relevant trade shows managing the reputation of British pork in China. ? Support AHDB trade promotion activity with importers and exporters to increase visibility of British pig meat to the Chinse import supply-chain, including traditional and digital platforms. ? Propose market priorities and work with AHDB colleagues to budget and plan to execute these as approved by councils. ? Support other activity across the region as appropriate.
Person Specification
Selection Criteria Essential (E) or Desirable (D)
1. Experience / qualifications
(1) Educated to Masters degree level or above (veterinary qualifications, CFA in agricultural economics, or relevant master’s/PhD) - (Essential) (2) Extensive experience / knowledge of the Chinese meat / food sector including production controls and standards across the supply chain - (Essential) (3) 8+ years’ experience in Chinese agri-food sector / 5+ years’ in policy analysis - (Essential) (4) Bi-lingual proficiency (Chinese and English) - (Essential) (5) Experience of studying and or living in the UK - (Desirable)
2. Enhanced Knowledge and skills
(1) 8+ years of proven experience in China’s agricultural trade/supply chain (at least 5+ years in pork/meat trade) - (Essential), including roles in: ?? Technical management for import/export clearance (e.g., veterinary certification, customs compliance) ?? Stakeholder engagement with Chinese meat associations (e.g., China Meat Association) or government bodies (MOA, GAC) (2) 5+ years in a leadership role (Team Leader/Senior Manager/Director) overseeing technical teams in international trade - (Desirable) (3) Experience working with foreign embassies, international organizations (e.g., FAO), or UK-based agricultural bodies - (Desirable) (4) Excellent leadership skills and strong relationship building and ability to build solid networks and demonstrable technical / veterinary experience - (Essential) (5) A confident communicator with excellent written and oral communication skills, in both Mandarin Chinese and English - (Essential)

4. Business Requirements
(1) Flexible in working hours - to accommodate unsociable hours and travel, both nationally and internationally (c 10%) - (Essential) The post holder will report administratively to CBBC’s office managers in Beijing and will be supported by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

We offer competitive packages which include basic gross salary, social insurance, medical insurance, housing fund and generous leave entitlement. The gross monthly package for this position is RMB 35k – RMB 40k based on matched qualification and experiences. We also provide an annual pro rata leave entitlement of 22-days.
